In the last few weeks we have heard Bertie Ahern's reflections on his time in office and his revelation as to what was his biggest mistake.

Was it allowing the economy to become hugely dependent on unnecessary development? No. Was it allowing public sector expenditure to spiral to keep up with the inflated house and land prices? No. Was it the relaxation of financial regulation? No. The biggest mistake was not having built his vanity bowl. This must cause him endless sleepless nights. Still he can find some consolation in the fact that he continues to provide a welcome distraction from the daily gloom with his occasional surreal insights from his funny little world.
