Folarin Balogun Cleared to Play for US Against Belgium After FIFA Lifts Suspension

Folarin Balogun eligible to play for US v Belgium as Fifa rescinds suspension for red card

Folarin Balogun, the striker for the United States, is set to participate in the Round of 16 match against Belgium on Monday, following FIFA’s announcement that it has lifted his one-game suspension related to a red card issued during the game against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This development significantly bolsters the US team’s chances as they strive to advance to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in over two decades. Balogun has been instrumental for the US, netting three goals in his three appearances thus far. His absence would have posed a challenge for head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who would have needed to find alternatives in the attacking lineup.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Decision

The FIFA disciplinary committee revealed that the red card suspension was rescinded under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which permits the annulment of red cards. Although the suspension is lifted, Balogun will be under a probationary period lasting one year. This means that if he commits a similar infringement within that timeframe, the one-game ban will be enforced.

FIFA has previously utilized Article 27 to allow Cristiano Ronaldo to play in Portugal’s opening matches following his red card against the Republic of Ireland.

Reactions to the Incident

In a statement, US Soccer expressed satisfaction with the ruling, stating, “another infringement of a similar nature and gravity,”

Balogun received the red card after a controversial collision with a defender from Bosnia and Herzegovina in a last-32 match. Initially, the referee did not call a foul, but after a review by the video assistant referee (VAR), it was determined that Balogun had stepped on the defender’s ankle, leading to the red card for violent conduct.

Players’ Perspectives

The decision caught many, including commentators and US players, by surprise, as they believed Balogun’s actions were unintentional. Coach Mauricio Pochettino remarked on the incident, saying, “We accept the decision of the disciplinary committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow,”

Initially, FIFA and US Soccer officials indicated that the one-game suspension could not be contested.

Reflecting on the experience, Balogun described it as “Our full attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans.” and he received acclaim for maintaining his composure in response to what many considered an excessive punishment. He stated, “For me? Never a red card,”
