England’s exhilarating 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup’s round of 16 was marred by an unfortunate injury to Jordan Henderson, who fell while celebrating and collided with an advertising board.
The former Liverpool midfielder, who did not play in the match, was promptly taken to a hospital where doctors confirmed he sustained a broken wrist, ruling him out for the remainder of the tournament.
Immediately following the final whistle, medical personnel rushed to the scene as England’s players celebrated in front of their fans. Henderson received oxygen on the field and was subsequently carried off on a stretcher.
“He’s in a bit of bother but our medical team have got everything under control probably. Best not to give too much detail when I don’t know too much what is going on. Everyone was there to support him and even that was a beautiful thing to see.” said Jude Bellingham. “Jordan injured his wrist, it just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is not with us. I don’t know the procedure, the doctor told me he is in the hospital.”
Later, England’s head coach, Thomas Tuchel, commented, “Jordan injured his wrist, it just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is not with us. I don’t know the procedure; the doctor told me he is in the hospital.”
During the match, Henderson received a yellow card following a sideline dispute. His only appearance in this World Cup came as a substitute in the 84th minute of the game against Panama.
England’s win was secured with two goals from Bellingham and a penalty by Harry Kane, managing to hold on for victory despite Jarell Quansah’s red card for a foul on Jesús Gallardo early in the second half.
