Lionel Messi Returns to Miami with Argentina: A Celebration for Fans

Lionel Messi makes his Miami homecoming with Argentina: ‘For us this is a chance to celebrate him’

Inter Miami lifts MLS Cup in 2025

Strolling through Miami’s Little Buenos Aires district, it’s common to encounter locals recounting their encounters with Lionel Messi. From bakery staff sharing stories of his visit and delight in medialunas to coffee shop patrons recalling a sighting of him in his luxury SUV, the excitement is palpable. Many claim to have met the Argentine icon at Publix, the local supermarket, and while it may sound exaggerated, selfies with Messi in the cereal aisle serve as proof.

Messi’s journey in Major League Soccer began three years ago, leaving the football world astonished. Now, his dual identity as a Miami local and a revered figure in Argentina will come to a head on Friday night when Argentina takes on Cape Verde at Hard Rock Stadium. This match marks a significant homecoming for Messi, who arrived in Miami in 2023, initially just another megastar but has since become embraced as a beloved figure, reminiscent of his time in Barcelona.

“For us this is just a chance to celebrate him,” says 27-year-old Thiago Gomez, an Inter Miami season ticket holder, expressing the sentiments of many fans. “It’s nice to have him here [every day] but it is something different entirely to see him play for the national team … you get the sense that he loves playing for Miami but he’s clearly possessed right now with Argentina, with the World Cup, with all of it.”

Messi’s transition to Inter Miami seemed almost surreal. As one of the greatest footballers ever and an internationally recognized figure, the move was about more than just the sport. After two challenging years at PSG that impacted both him and his family, Inter Miami offered a chance for a fresh start, prioritizing family life while stepping slightly away from the relentless global gaze.

By coming to the United States, Messi joined a lineage of footballers seeking solace from intense scrutiny, names like Pelé, George Best, Johan Cruyff, Thierry Henry, and David Beckham. While some found moments of anonymity, Messi’s global fame ensured that total privacy was never an option. In Miami, with its large South and Central American community, Messi’s presence was always going to attract attention.

In the beginning, media attention was relentless, with fans eager to catch a glimpse of him outside Inter Miami’s training grounds. The frenzy escalated on the road, with supporters following the team’s bus to the stadium and spotting Messi at restaurants, NBA games, and high-end shops. Sightings of the superstar became a popular pastime.

However, by 2026, this dynamic has shifted significantly. While a few fans, mainly children, still pursue him, Messi’s life in Miami has normalized. Over three years, he has brought a championship to the city and expressed his affection for it and its people. While Miami may never rival Barcelona, where he is celebrated as a prodigal son, or Argentina, where he is regarded as a national hero, it has carved a meaningful place in Messi’s heart.

Inter Miami has become a masterclass in marketing, making its signature pink a common sight throughout the city, with countless fans donning Messi jerseys daily. On Wednesday evening, this vibrant display was augmented by a wave of blue and white as Messi’s Argentina arrived in Miami, accompanied by passionate supporters. The defending champions have garnered substantial representation at the tournament, rivaling that of the host nations.

On Thursday evening, the Buenos Aires Bakery & Cafe buzzed with locals and visitors clad in the albiceleste colors. Situated in the heart of Little Buenos Aires, the bakery played Argentine music while fans discussed their team’s chances for the upcoming match. Many locals dreamt of attending the game in person, with the bakery offering a special experience for those willing to pay a $20 cover and spend at least $15.

Five miles away, in South Beach, another crowd of Argentina supporters gathered outside Baires, a popular Argentine steakhouse. While fans passionately express their admiration for Messi, a group of locals, fueled by wine, had been drawn in from the Argentine banderazo, a large pre-match rally celebrating the team.

The day was long but filled with celebration, centering around Messi’s group stage performance—six goals in three matches, making him the tournament’s top scorer and earning him the all-time World Cup goalscoring record.

Miami fans can look forward to more opportunities to see Messi in action. Earlier this year, he signed an extension that could see him with the team until the end of the 2028 season.

The chance to witness one of the sport’s greatest players competing in a World Cup on home turf is a unique experience, one that every Argentine supporter in Miami seems to fully appreciate.
