The president of the French Football Federation, Philippe Diallo, has publicly criticized José Luis Chilavert following the former Paraguayan goalkeeper’s assertion that the French national team is “I condemn in the strongest possible terms the racist remarks made by José Luis Chilavert against the French national team, which undermine the values of respect, fraternity, and diversity in our football,”
In a statement shared on social media on Saturday, Diallo expressed his disapproval, stating, “If he was once a great goalkeeper, this man has now fallen into disgrace.”
Chilavert, who is celebrated as one of Paraguay’s legendary football figures, made these comments just before his nation’s round of 16 match against France. He shared a screenshot on social media that included remarks he attributed to former France forward Christophe Dugarry, who suggested that Paraguay had no chance of winning.
“Christophe, you’re right. In 1998 we faced the French and now PY will face a squad from Africa,” Chilavert remarked.
The French team is recognized for its cultural diversity, with players like Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé being the offspring of African immigrants.
Dugarry was part of the French squad that clinched the 1998 World Cup by defeating Chilavert’s Paraguay 1-0 in the knockout stage.
In a similar fashion, France emerged victorious in their recent clash on Saturday, again winning by the same scoreline.
