The Socceroos have expressed their dissatisfaction with referee Felix Zwayer, labeling his officiating a “If you look at how the referee was today, [there’s] not much I can say about that,” following their 2-0 defeat to the USA during a World Cup match in Seattle. Players felt that a series of questionable decisions contributed to their loss.
The contentious second goal for the USA came after a review by the video assistant referee, with the Australian team questioning whether an offside player had interfered with goalkeeper Patrick Beach as he attempted to recover from a misplayed shot.
However, the primary concern for the Socceroos was the numerous non-calls they felt were unfairly overlooked. Connor Metcalfe seemed to be fouled in the penalty area, and forward Nestory Irankunda was taken down off the ball by American defender Chris Richards. Multiple appeals from players during the game went unheeded.
Irankunda remarked on the team’s misfortune, stating, “The ref was having a stinker today, but I mean it is what it is,” He further criticized the officiating, saying, “He was giving every call to the USA. I get it, but at the same time, we know there’s two teams on the field, so you have to give the calls both ways and he didn’t do that today.”
Coach Tony Popovic noted that while the game wasn’t overly physical, the inconsistency of the officiating was noticeable. He commented, “I thought the referee gave too many fouls away, in all honesty, he said. “Sometimes you didn’t have to do much to win a foul, and on the other occasions you you had to do a fair bit to get one.”

Despite their disappointment, the Socceroos remain optimistic about their chances of turning around their World Cup campaign.
Australia found themselves trailing 2-0 at halftime after a lackluster first half. This result at the 68,000-capacity Seattle Stadium secured the USA’s advancement to the knockout rounds, and they later learned they had topped Group D following Paraguay’s win over Turkey. Meanwhile, Australia’s chances of progressing to the last 32 now hinge on their upcoming final group-stage match against Paraguay in San Francisco; a win or draw will suffice for qualification, but a loss could spell the end of their tournament hopes.
Following the match, captain Harry Souttar appeared dejected but emphasized the team’s potential to move forward. He stated, “[The reaction] has got to be a positive one tomorrow,”

He added, “We can look back at the game properly and take bits that we did well and that we didn’t do well – there’s a lot of them.”
The Socceroos showed signs of improvement in the second half but ultimately struggled to claw their way back against a determined opponent.
“We’re in that position where we know we can go through, if we get a result. So yeah, full focus and positivity has got to be [there] for that last game,” Souttar reflected. “We didn’t start well enough,”

Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe, who both scored against Turkey last week, made an impact after coming on during halftime, alongside Cristian Volpato, who made his World Cup debut.
Midfielder Aiden O’Neill expressed that the Socceroos “They were in our faces, we couldn’t keep the ball down, we were always trying to get in behind early, we just didn’t really show that composure that I think you think you needed. But the reaction was good.” and are eager to take the positives from their second-half performance into the match against Paraguay. He praised Volpato’s “The boss always talks about the belief in the squad and I think maybe in the second half we really truly believed that we would get back into it,” and acknowledged the contributions of the other substitutes.
“Maybe you could see that on the field, and we gave everything. I think everyone can see that.” O’Neill said. “I don’t know if it’s the occasion, but we looked sluggish, heavy legged, dull,”
Popovic struggled to articulate the team’s lackluster first-half showing. “They won every duel, they won every second ball and when you do that, it makes it very difficult to get any, gain any momentum.” he noted. “We’ve got to accept what happened today, and I’m really delighted with the second half, to be honest, with all the players that came on, and the players that didn’t have a good first half,”
However, he praised the team’s second-half response, calling it “It’s a World Cup. We move on to Paraguay and we’ll work hard to be ready for that.” and a solid foundation for their next match.
“We’ve got to accept what happened today, and I’m really delighted with the second half, to be honest, with all the players that came on, and the players that didn’t have a good first half,” Popovic said. “It’s a World Cup. We move on to Paraguay and we’ll work hard to be ready for that.”
