Switzerland Advances to Last 16 with Comfortable Victory Over Algeria

Manzambi dazzles as Switzerland stroll into last 16 with win over Algeria

Dan Ndoye’s strike sails past Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane

Newcastle United is reportedly eager to finalize a deal for Johan Manzambi, a 20-year-old forward from Freiburg who showcased his skills by dismantling the Algeria defense. His assist for Breel Embolo marked Switzerland’s opening goal in a decisive win that secured their place in the knockout stage. Captain Granit Xhaka has attempted to temper rising expectations, but the team’s triumph in a World Cup knockout match for the first time since 1938 complicates that effort.

This moment signifies a new chapter for the Swiss squad, though President Guy Parmelin noted their consistent performance. Sitting in the VIP section next to Gianni Infantino, he wore a striking red cap reminiscent of Donald Trump’s signature style. However, Parmelin’s hat bore the phrase: “Switzerland great since 1291” instead of any political slogans.

Manzambi, who previously scored three goals in the tournament, added another assist to his tally. His performance came despite Freiburg’s loss to Aston Villa in the Europa League final in May. With this latest contribution, he became the youngest player to achieve five goal involvements at a World Cup since records began. Only Thomas Müller has matched this feat under the age of 21, doing so for Germany in 2010. Switzerland’s head coach, Murat Yakin, praised him, stating, “He is a precious player for us, a brilliant footballer and he is just improving one match after the other,”

Algeria failed to heed the warning issued before the match by the stadium announcer, who urged spectators to keep an eye on Manzambi as highlights of his warm-up were shown. The display highlighted Manzambi’s impressive ranking in FIFA’s attacking power rankings, where he stood sixth, trailing behind stars like Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane.

Just ten minutes into the match, Ruben Vargas delivered a clever pass to Manzambi, who then took control of the ball just inside the Algeria half. He skillfully carried it to the byline, outmaneuvering right-back Aissa Mandi before delivering a precise cross. Embolo capitalized on the opportunity, celebrating with a playful expression that highlighted the assist’s quality.

From that point on, Switzerland dominated the game, quickly doubling their lead just 48 seconds into the second half. Dan Ndoye effortlessly converted Mandi’s wayward clearance, striking the ball into the far corner past goalkeeper Luca Zidane, who could only get a fingertip to it. Yakin, sporting his gray quiff and thick-rimmed maroon glasses, emerged from his dugout to savor the moment as passage to the next round loomed.

After a frustrating opening draw against Qatar, where they conceded a stoppage-time equalizer, Switzerland has now achieved three consecutive victories, scoring a total of eight goals while conceding only twice. Vargas impressed with his efforts on the left flank, while Ndoye posed a consistent threat on the right. Manzambi was substituted midway through the second half, having completed his impactful performance. Defensively, Switzerland faced little challenge, with Algeria failing to test goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Houssem Aouar squandered a significant early opportunity while Ibrahim Maza later shot wide after receiving a cross from Mahrez. Shortly after falling behind, Mahrez’s shot lacked conviction, and he subsequently announced his retirement from international football, reflecting on missed chances in his final match.

Switzerland nearly added a third goal in the 81st minute when Denis Zakaria sent a cross into the box. However, instead of scoring, Fabian Rieder misdirected the ball back towards Zidane, allowing the Algeria goalkeeper to claim it. Ultimately, Switzerland’s solid performance meant there was no late anxiety, and they can now familiarize themselves with their surroundings in British Columbia as they prepare to face either Colombia or Ghana in Vancouver on Tuesday.

Algeria’s head coach, Vladimir Petkovic, who has extensive knowledge of Swiss football from his time managing the team for seven years, remarked, “He has so many qualities as a player … It’s just so much fun to work with him and see him perform like that. He is really evolving.” He added, “He’s had a great tournament, keep your eyes on him,”
