On Wednesday, South Africa rejoiced as they secured their first-ever place in the World Cup knockout rounds, thanks to Thapelo Maseko’s decisive goal that led to a 1-0 victory over South Korea. This win keeps South Korea’s hopes alive for advancing as one of the top eight third-placed teams.
Maseko struck in the 63rd minute, sending the ball into the bottom corner of the net. With this victory, South Africa now has four points and will face co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on June 28. Meanwhile, South Korea, starting without their star player Son Heung-min, remains with three points.
Historically, South Africa had struggled in previous World Cups, failing to progress beyond the group stage in 1998, 2002, and 2010.
“It was a fantastic experience,” said South Africa’s coach Hugo Broos. “It was so tough today, but it was a good game. I think tactically we were very good and it was difficult for South Korea to find space.
“It was so tough today, but it was a good game. I think tactically we were very good and it was difficult for South Korea to find space. “We scored, then there were 20 minutes of heart-stopping moments. It’s historical, and I’m very happy for the guys. I’ve been working with them for five years.”
South Korea began the match brightly, dominating possession but lacking the necessary finishing touch. An early chance came when Kim Min-jae’s header was saved off the line by Aubrey Modiba just two minutes in, and shortly after, Lee Kang-in missed the target from inside the penalty area.
As the match progressed, South Africa grew more confident. They nearly scored in the 19th minute when Maseko sprinted onto a through ball, only to be thwarted by a remarkable tackle from Lee Ki-hyuk.
South Korea’s goalkeeper, Kim Seung-gyu, showcased his skills with a stunning double save, first stopping Thalente Mbatha’s shot and then smothering the rebound from Evidence Makgopa.
After weathering the initial storm from South Korea, who struggled to generate clear chances despite Son’s introduction at halftime, South Africa finally broke the deadlock. Tshepang Moremi delivered a precise pass to Maseko, who expertly shifted to his left foot before firing a low shot into the bottom right corner, securing their place in the last 32.
