Crime - Man charged with Lucan murder
A 25-year-old man appeared in court yesterday charged with the murder of a 33-year-old Lucan man.
Shane Millea (25), from Celbridge, was charged with the fatal stabbing of Paul Harris (33) at his home at Cannonbrook Park in Lucan on Thursday evening.
He appeared at the Bridewell court yesterday morning and the court heard that when charged he replied: "I think it, I don't know it. It won't stand when the truth comes out. I did what I thought was appropriate." He was remanded in custody and is due to appear in court again on Tuesday. Millea's right arm was in a sling and a request for medical assistance was made.
Northern Ireland - Burial of 'disappeared' man Gerry Evans
The funeral took place in Armagh yesterday of Gerry Evans, one of the North's "disappeared", 31 years after he first went missing in March 1979. Evans was last seen hitch-hiking from Castleblayney, Co Monaghan. It is believed he was kidnapped and murdered by the IRA. The body of the 24-year-old was not found until seven weeks ago in Co Louth.
National News - Memorial service for New Zealand miners
Members of the New Zealand community in Ireland are to hold a memorial service for the 29 miners killed in a recent accident at Pike River in Greymouth, New Zealand, later today.
The service, which is being organised by the New Zealand Ireland Association, will take place at 3.30pm at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin.
National News - Dublin's New Year plans to be declared
Details of Dublin's New Year celebrations are due to be formally announced by Dublin lord mayor Gerry Breen at the Mansion House later today.
The three-day programme of events will include contributions from a variety of street performers and musical acts, along with a number of family-focused events.
