Funeral Details - Funeral of Maurice Neligan on Tuesday


THE funeral of the late Maurice Neligan will take place this Tuesday at the Church of the Assumption in Booterstown, Dublin. The pioneering heart surgeon died suddenly at his home last Thursday. He was 73. His remains will be removed to Booterstown at 5pm tomorrow and the funeral mass will take place at 11.30am on Tuesday. His son Maurice said: "Whilst we did not have enough time with him we are certainly celebrating a life rich with achievement."


Home Affairs - Nine arrested for dissident activities


NINE men were arrested yesterday in connection with the activity of dissident republicans.


Two of the arrests were made in Dunleer, Co Louth following the discovery of a gun and ammunition. Six others were taken into custody in Wexford and an area was sealed off following the discovery of bomb-making equipment. One other arrest was made in Waterford.


Home Affairs - Cork flood warning


CORK city was placed under flood alert yesterday with home and business owners in low-lying areas being warned to protect their properties. Kyrls Quay suffered its worst flooding in almost a year on Friday night while other quay areas were also affected. No damage is thought to have occurred although residents in the city remain concerned of a repeat of catastrophic flooding last year.


Politics - Kenny pledges end of 'reckless banks'


FINE GAEL leader Enda Kenny pledged to "never again let bad politics and reckless banks destroy the economy" at the party's annual presidential dinner in Dublin last night. He spoke about his party's plans to restore order to the public finances, create jobs and get credit flowing. He reiterated plans to scrap the Seanad and cut the number of TDs, before adding: "From this day forward let us stand together as a people and rebuild our country.
