Disputed territory - UN to probe Rockall ownership claims
The United Nations is likely to examine claims to the ownership of the remote islet of Rockall within weeks after Denmark made a submission.
Ownership of the outcrop in the Atlantic has long been disputed by Britain, Ireland, Denmark and the Faroe Islands and Iceland.
Denmark and the Faroe Islands made a submission to the UN early in December.
Road fatalities - Man and women killed in car crash
A man and a woman died following a single car crash on the MI near Milltown, Co Louth.
The accident happened at around 4.30am yesterday morning when the car hit a fence. Both victims, who were believed to be in their 20s, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Health - Swine flu cases on the rise again
Latest figures show there were 91 confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus last week, which is three times the number of cases the previous week.
Thirty-four people required hospitalisation, seven of whom were pregnant women.
Fire death - Man perishes in house blaze
A man in his 50s died following a house fire in Clonee in west Dublin. Emergency services were called to the house at Hunters Run at about 8.30pm on New Year's Eve. The victim was brought to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown, where he was pronounced dead.
