Former Fine Gael minister Ivan Yates says his future as a presenter with radio station Newstalk will be decided by audience figures released later this year.

The Wexford businessman initially agreed a three-month term with the broadcaster. This is due to end on 21 August. While saying he has no plans to sign a formal contract with Newstalk, Yates will continue with the station until at least November.

"I could be shown the door at Christmas," the 49-year-old said. "I haven't signed anything for any further period. I'm open-minded about the thing.

"My own view is that the JNLR radio figures in November will be a critical issue for me. Being from a business background, I'm a great believer in 'cut the bullshit, show me the figures'. I am either making a contribution to Newstalk or it's not working. I will let the listeners decide. I have said my objective for the programme is that it will be the most listened-to show on Newstalk."

Much of Yates's presenting and interviewing on the show has been done standing up, as a result of an ongoing condition he has with two slipped discs in his back.

He admits some interviewees have found his six-foot frame intimidating, as he stood over them asking questions.

"We have had guests in the studio who found it intimidating and have said so, but it's not intended. I have a problem with my back for which I have resisted surgery because surgery might not be successful. It means that if I sit for more than 30 or 40 minutes at a time, I get acute pain.

Speaking to the Sunday Tribune this weekend, Newstalk chief executive Frank Cronin said he was "very happy" with Yates's work with the station.

"Ivan has been a fantastic contributor to The Breakfast Show and to Newstalk," he said. "Of course, it will take time for him to gel but we're committed to him and him to us for the appropriate amount of time. For as long as we're both happy, he will be doing it."
