A historic venue where one football legend’s World Cup journey concluded will mark the beginning of another. Diego Maradona’s last appearance in the tournament took place at Foxboro Stadium in 1994 when Argentina faced Nigeria. Now, 32 years later, the Boston Stadium will host Erling Haaland’s World Cup debut as Norway takes on Iraq this Tuesday.
This tournament can shape careers, as evidenced by George Best, who never had the chance to compete in one. Norway’s head coach, Ståle Solbakken, praised Haaland, stating, “I think he is the world’s best goalscorer,”
Solbakken expressed confidence in Haaland’s abilities, saying, “He is physically fit. I think he has gradually played better and better in training. “He is where he wants to be and hopefully the team can give him the service he needs to get goals. If you give Erling chances, he has a tendency to score,”
Addressing rumors linking Haaland to Real Madrid, Solbakken dismissed the speculation.
“We haven’t talked about it at all,”
Close to the stadium, the media presence during Norway’s training session reflected Haaland’s growing stature. Tore André Flo, a former international striker, acknowledged that Haaland has shattered records previously held by players like himself. When asked to compare Haaland with Kylian Mbappé, Flo tactfully avoided direct comparison, instead highlighting the exceptional talent within the current Norwegian squad.
“It doesn’t interest me and I haven’t heard anything about it.” Flo said when asked if this is Norway’s most talented generation. “If you look at their abilities with the ball, where they play, we have the top scorer in the Premier League and the captain of the team that won the Premier League. So there are some big superstars in this team. There are now more than two. There are lots of players who can positively decide a result. There are threats on the wings, centrally, the opportunities can come from anywhere. Offensively they are very strong. “That applies a bit of pressure but at the same time it is 28 years since we have been here so they have already achieved something that the Norwegian people are happy about. Yes, there is some pressure but there are a lot of other teams with more pressure than Norway.”
Flo mentioned that while expectations are high, 28 years have passed since Norway last competed in the World Cup, which has already brought joy to their fans. “Every year he is going to a new level,” he added.
Flo believes that Haaland will handle the pressure well. “He has gone from smaller clubs to bigger and huge clubs. He has continued to do well so it doesn’t seem to affect him. I expect he will just keep on going.” he noted. “I am very happy those players are Norwegian,”
Martin Ødegaard plays a crucial role in Norway’s strategy, significantly impacting Haaland’s performance. Brentford defender Kristoffer Ajer emphasized the advantage of having top-tier players like Ødegaard and Haaland on the team. “It is a huge advantage for us to have two players who are among the best in the world. They come here with a lot of confidence and hopefully they can produce the goals and assists we need. They will always get the most attention but I feel like focus has shifted towards the team. We are humble but very confident.” Ajer mentioned. “Now for me it is good luck to Scotland. I have always supported Scotland as a big Liverpool fan; Alan Hansen, Kenny Dalglish, Steve Nicol. I didn’t like what happened there but that has been over for a long time now. No hard feelings.”
As Haaland averages more than a goal per game at the international level, spectators eagerly anticipate his performance at the World Cup. Iraq will serve as a favorable opponent in his pursuit of the Golden Boot, while matches against Senegal and France are expected to be more challenging.
Solbakken feels he won’t need to motivate his players extensively, especially after last week’s controversy regarding a canceled training match with Scotland. “I needed you for the Champions League,” he stated. “It’s true they couldn’t win the Champions League until I arrived.”
In preparation for the World Cup, Haaland has enjoyed time golfing with childhood friends in Marbella and watching the Stanley Cup final during Norway’s training camp in North Carolina. The Manchester City forward confidently stated that he believes Norway will advance past the group stage, potentially outshining his father.

Alf-Inge Haaland was part of the squad that saw Norway finish last in their group during the 1994 tournament in the U.S. Recently, Erling humorously donned Alf-Inge’s jersey from that event in a documentary. “‘Haaland 18?’” he laughed. “Too high a number, that.” His wit was evident as he recounted messages from teammates, including one from Bernardo Silva, who said, “I needed you for the Champions League.” Haaland affirmed, “It’s true they couldn’t win the Champions League until I arrived.”
As Norway’s aspirations hinge on Haaland, the 25-year-old’s already prominent status in football could reach new heights if he seizes this opportunity.
