World Cup 2026: third-place table, who has qualified and who needs what?

Mexico were the first team to qualify for the knockout rounds.

How are teams ranked?

Teams that finish with equal points are ranked using a specific hierarchy: first, by head-to-head points, followed by head-to-head goal difference, then goals scored in those matches, overall goal difference, total goals scored, disciplinary points, and finally FIFA rankings.

The top two teams from each group will progress, alongside the eight best third-placed teams.

Teams Qualified for the Last 32

Argentina, France, Germany, Mexico, Norway, the USA, and Colombia have all secured their places in the knockout rounds.

Teams Eliminated

Haiti, Jordan, Tunisia, Turkey, and Panama have been eliminated from the competition.

Third-Place Qualification Explained

The eight best third-placed teams will qualify for the knockout stage according to a ranking system that evaluates points, goal difference, goals scored, fair play status, and FIFA rankings. Currently, accumulating five points should be enough for qualification based on the results seen so far.

Group A

Mexico has qualified as the group winner and will take on a third-placed team from Groups C, E, F, H, or I. Although South Korea could match their points total, Mexico prevails on head-to-head results.

South Korea can secure their advancement with either a win or a draw against South Africa.

Czechia could clinch second place by defeating Mexico, while South Africa must also best South Korea to move forward. Should either team finish third, they could still find a way to qualify.

Remaining matches: Mexico vs. Czechia, South Africa vs. South Korea.

Group B

Canada can ensure their qualification with either a draw or a victory against Switzerland.

Switzerland will also secure a place with a win or draw against Canada.

Both Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar must seek a decisive win in their matchup to have any hope of qualifying as one of the top third-placed teams.

Remaining matches: Switzerland vs. Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina vs. Qatar.

Group C

Brazil will qualify with either a draw or a win against Scotland.

Morocco can secure their spot with a draw or a win against Haiti.

Scotland needs a victory over Brazil to advance; a draw might leave them behind Morocco on head-to-head criteria, although four points with an equal goal difference could still lead to a third-place advancement.

Haiti has already been eliminated from the tournament.

Remaining matches: Scotland vs. Brazil, Morocco vs. Haiti.

Group D

The USA has advanced as the group winners and will compete against a third-placed team from Groups B, E, F, I, or J.

Australia can guarantee their progression with a draw or a win over Paraguay.

Paraguay must defeat Australia to keep their hopes alive, while a draw might leave them with a chance to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

Turkey has been eliminated from contention.

Remaining matches: Turkey vs. USA, Paraguay vs. Australia.

Group E

Germany has advanced as group winners and will face a third-placed team from Groups A, B, C, D, or F.

Côte d’Ivoire needs at least one point against Curaçao to ensure their progression.

Ecuador must secure a win against Germany to maintain their hopes of third-place qualification, depending on a favorable outcome between Curaçao and Côte d’Ivoire.

Curaçao must emerge victorious against Côte d’Ivoire to keep their chances alive, relying on a specific result in Ecuador’s match against Germany.

Remaining matches: Curaçao vs. Côte d’Ivoire, Ecuador vs. Germany.

Group F

The Netherlands will qualify with a win or draw against Tunisia.

Japan can secure their place with a draw or win versus Sweden.

Sweden needs to defeat Japan to ensure their advancement; however, a draw could still allow them a chance to move forward as one of the best third-placed teams, contingent on goal difference.

Tunisia has been eliminated from the tournament.

Remaining matches: Tunisia vs. Netherlands, Japan vs. Sweden.

Group G

Egypt can secure qualification with a draw or win against Iran.

Iran will qualify if they can defeat Egypt.

Belgium must triumph over New Zealand to guarantee their advancement.

New Zealand needs a victory against Belgium while hoping Iran does not win against Egypt to have a shot at progression.

Remaining matches: Egypt vs. Iran, New Zealand vs. Belgium.

Group H

Spain will qualify with either a win or a draw against Uruguay.

Uruguay must defeat Spain to secure their position; a draw might leave them with a slim chance of third-place qualification.

Cape Verde can advance by overcoming Saudi Arabia; a draw provides only a minimal chance of progression.

Saudi Arabia needs to defeat Cape Verde while hoping Uruguay does not win against Spain to maintain a shot at second place.

Remaining matches: Uruguay vs. Spain, Cape Verde vs. Saudi Arabia.

Group I

Both France and Norway have qualified for the knockout stage.

Senegal and Iraq are set to clash, knowing they must win to have any chance of advancing as one of the top eight third-placed teams, though they will need help from other matches.

Remaining matches: Norway vs. France, Senegal vs. Iraq.

Group J

Argentina has progressed as group winners and will face the runners-up from Group H in the knockout rounds.

Austria can advance with a win or draw against Algeria.

Algeria must defeat Austria to reach the last 32.

As the final group to conclude, Austria and Algeria could know if a narrow defeat or draw might still enable them to qualify in third place.

Jordan has been eliminated.

Remaining matches: Algeria vs. Austria, Jordan vs. Argentina.

Group K

Colombia has qualified and will top the group if they avoid defeat against Portugal.

Portugal can also advance with a result against Colombia; with four points and a solid goal difference, they would need to suffer a heavy loss to miss the chance at a third-place finish.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo must defeat Uzbekistan to keep their hopes alive but will need to know how many goals they need to win by to have a shot at third place.

Uzbekistan needs a significant victory over the DRC to stay in contention and could be eliminated if too many groups end with third-placed teams at four points.

Remaining matches: Colombia vs. Portugal, Democratic Republic of the Congo vs. Uzbekistan.

Group L

England will qualify if they avoid defeat against Panama.

Ghana will progress if they can avoid losing to Croatia.

Croatia must beat Ghana to ensure their place, while a draw may still leave them a chance at third place.

Panama has been eliminated from the tournament.

Remaining matches: England vs. Panama, Croatia vs. Ghana.
