France Secures Narrow Victory Over Paraguay in Philadelphia Showdown

France deliver knockout punch to Paraguay in the Battle of Philadelphia

Jesse Marsch and his Canada players applaud the fans

PARA-MEDIC

“Good evening. The game you are about to see is the most stupid, appalling, disgusting and disgraceful exhibition of football in the history of the game.”

If David Coleman were still alive, he might have echoed such sentiments regarding the highlights of France’s 1-0 win over Paraguay at the Geopolitics World Cup, reminiscent of the infamous Chile 2-0 Italy match from 1962.

Although the events in Philadelphia did not entirely reflect the chaotic atmosphere of the Battle of Santiago, one team’s intent to engage in rough play was evident. Notably, no players were ejected from the game, as not a single Paraguayan received a yellow card despite their aggressive tactics. In contrast, three French players were cautioned. Observing the match through the lens of referee Ilgiz Tantashev from Uzbekistan would have been a surreal experience.

Andrés Cubas aggressively challenged Adrien Rabiot, while Juan José Cáceres went after Kylian Mbappé. Yet, it seemed that no real checks were enforced. Paraguay’s strategy appeared aimed at leveling the playing field against France, and they seemed to receive support from the officiating crew. Even the penalty awarded to France, a clear foul on Désiré Doué by Diego Gómez, was given hesitantly, with Tantashev consulting the VAR. Furthermore, Gustavo Velázquez was remarkably unpunished for disrupting the penalty spot, and Paraguay’s goalkeeper, Orlando Gill, attempted to unsettle Mbappé. Nevertheless, Mbappé maintained his composure, converting the penalty with satisfaction. After the match, he chose not to shake Gill’s hand, leading to Gill throwing a ball at him in frustration. “Since he didn’t pay me any attention, I lost my temper,” Gill lamented.

Mbappé relished the chance to criticize Paraguay. “They thought we’d show up in tuxedos to play, but we know how to play dirty football too,” he proclaimed. “We won and we were better than them.” There is little doubt regarding the outcome, and it seems Tantashev’s officiating days in the GWC may be over. Many have suggested that the GWC’s refereeing aims to limit what is derided in the USA as “We totally controlled the match. We were the ones more likely to win the game, but goals change games so they could sit back. But overall in the match we were better than them. If you’d said [before the game] we were going to play like that … you’d think we were going to win the match” yet kicking and fouling opponents should still warrant at least a yellow card. While this newsletter acknowledges the appeal of controversial scenes, what transpired in Philadelphia was still a poor representation of the sport, even if it did not reach the level of the most disgraceful matches in football history.

QUOTES OF THE DAY

“It takes some nerve to say that when you lose 3-0”

– Jesse Marsch backs his Canada side to a delusional degree after their GWC loss to Morocco.

“With respect to Mr Round (yesterday’s Letters), I have read plenty of ‘positive’ intros from Football Daily during the GWC, but Football Daily never would have lasted as long as it has without the ‘snark’ from we 1,057 pedants” – the Morocco head coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, offers a succinct response to Marsch’s claims.

FOOTBALL DAILY LETTERS

“For the first two weeks of this super-sized GWC, we were subjected to match after match of free-flowing football, with hardly any opportunity (hydration breaks aside) to watch the players standing around. But at last, with Belgium’s late penalty and Croatia’s last-second non-equaliser, we’ve got back to what makes the game beautiful: long VAR checks that decide crucial matches” — JJ Zucal.

“Bono made some superb saves for Morocco last night – he certainly gave them The Edge over Canada”

– Anthony Alessandrini.

“Bono made some superb saves for Morocco last night – he certainly gave them The Edge over Canada” – Phil Taverner.
